As part of the National Action Plan “IN FORM – German national initiative to promote healthy diets and physical activity” of the Federal Government cross-linking units for school catering have been set. In Thuringia, the Vernetzungsstelle Schulverpflegung (VNS - Networking Unit for School Catering) is based at the VZTH in Erfurt. The VNS is supported by federal funds and state funds of the Thuringian Ministry of Migration, Justice and Consumer Protection.
Main Goal of the VNS is to improve the quality and acceptance of school catering and to create suitable conditions for healthy and tasty school meals in accordance with the quality standards of the German Nutrition Society. The VNS cooperates with food suppliers, schools, parents’ associations and regional producers in order to initiate and accompany an exchange of experiences and thus changes in school meals (e.g. menu composition, cost planning, quality assurance). Part of the work of the VNS is to provide consultations, lectures and information about topics of school catering and to organize workshops and conferences for caterer and schools. Its web-page provides current and general information on school meals as well as a caterer database.
